Myths and Realities when it comes to umbrella companies

    1. There are a number of myths about what an umbrella company does or how it works. Here we put paid to some of them and explain what’s really going on!
  • MYTH: You’re employed by your agency, or self-employed, and we charge you a fee for providing a payroll service.
  • REALITY: You’re permanently employed by us to carry out assignments on our behalf and WE pay you for carrying out that work. We make a small profit on providing your services to our customers.
  • MYTH: Your agency pays us your wages and we forward them on once we’ve deducted Income Tax and National Insurance.
  • REALITY: We charge your agency for providing services to them and WE pay you for the work you’ve done on our behalf, as you’d expect as an employee. These two transactions are entirely separate.
  • MYTH: You need to make sure your assignment is IR35 friendly.
  • REALITY: As you will be permanently employed by Genie Umbrella, you will be paid and taxed under normal PAYE as an employee, making IR35 irrelevant.
  • MYTH: An umbrella company should be ‘HMRC approved’
  • REALITY: HMRC do not rubber stamp umbrella companies as approved, compliant or any other certification. As an employer, your umbrella company is regulated by UK tax legislation (ITEPA) and Employment Law and should adhere to everything relating to those regimes at all times
