Demand for supply teachers on the increase.
For the academic year April 2012 to March 2013 figures have revealed that schools in Suffolk spent in excess of £9 million pounds on supply teachers.
Graham White, the secretary of Suffolk NUT, said it was preferable”to use supply teachers rather than cover supervisors, teaching assistants or higher level teaching assistants."
The numbers were released through a Freedom of Information request to Suffolk County Council and represents the combined spend of the county’s primary and secondary schools, with the addition of that spent for special schools and pupil referral units bringing the overall total to £9,314,365.
Seemingly in Suffolk primary schools were the most dependent on supply teachers, spending over £5.5m in one year. A total of 28 primaries spent more than £20,000.
Figures show that nationally there were an average of 41,000 temporary teachers each week in the spring term of 2013, compared to 37,200 in the same period in 2012.*
The biggest increases were found in secondary schools, which relied on 17 per cent more supply teachers and 55 per cent more interim support staff than they did last year.
Nationally London saw the largest rises, where the average number of supply teachers in the classroom each week went up 41 per cent from 5,860 to 8,260 this year.
