Why did I want to be an accountant?
Good question, why did I want to be an accountant? Accountants have a stereotype of working a dull number crunching role. This stereotype is still around today; I attended a networking event for small businesses and met a person who believed he could guess anyone’s job straight away – just by looking at them. When I asked him what he thought I did for a living, his answer was marketing. I still remember today how surprised he was when I told him I was an accountant.

I started as an administrator for a warehouse operations company however they decided not to continue with this type of service so I was offered a new role in finance. You could say I just fell in to it. Once I started though I knew that this would be the path for me.
I worked in internal finance for a few years however, I missed the interaction with customers so decided to join a small practice. I still felt that I wanted more of a relationship with my clients so I searched for a role that would give me just that.
I joined Genie Accountancy in October 2011 just in time for the launch. I heard about Genie Accountancy through a recruitment consultant I knew. At first I was unsure whether joining a brand new company would be a wise career move however, after meeting with Helen (Operations Director) and hearing about how she wanted to run a company that created personal relationships between the accountant and client; I knew this business would succeed.
Seeing the business grow from less than a handful of employees to what we are today has made me proud to be part of it. I believe that the relationships we build with our clients have helped us get to where we are now.
I like being part of the journey with my clients; guiding them through the steps with their Limited company, getting to know them and answering all of their questions. I have one rule with my clients – there is no such thing as a silly question!
